June 11, 1916 – January 5, 2011
Matilda Mary Tahmoush, lovingly known as “Tillie,” was born on June 11, 1916, the twin sister of Abraham Tahmoush and daughter of Leon and Jameelah (Samra) Tahmoush. She grew up alongside her older sister, Sophie, and her younger brother, George, who died early in life.
Tillie spent most of her life in Pawtucket before moving to Lincoln in 1987. In 1947, she married Louis Josephs, and together they raised four children:
- Mary Lou (William Catelli) – a dedicated teacher
- Joanne (Very Rev. Bishop John Abdalah) – a caring social worker
- Lois (George Kilsey) – a successful manufacturing executive
- Leon (Judith Entwistle) – an accomplished vascular surgeon and hospital CEO
Education was always a priority for Tillie. After Louis’s early passing, she worked tirelessly to ensure each of her children received a strong education, setting an inspiring example by earning her own GED at the age of 62.
Tillie was deeply loved and cherished by her eight grandchildren: Gregory, Kathryn, Joseph, Robert, Michael, Maria, Mary, and Christopher. Her family was her greatest source of joy and pride.
Beyond her devotion to family, Tillie generously shared her talents with her church and community. An exceptional seamstress, she created altar cloths, altar boy robes, and church banners, leaving a lasting mark on the parish she loved. She served as Ladies’ Society treasurer for many years and dedicated time as a Sunday School teacher, shaping the faith of younger generations.
While Tillie achieved much in life, she was most fondly remembered for her warm, welcoming nature and her infectious smile that brightened every room she entered. Her faith, generosity, and love of family continue to inspire all who knew her.
